Highlights in the south of Jordan

Immerse yourself in a film-worthy setting

Just a few hours away and easily accessible from Aqaba or Amman, the desert city of Petra (known from Indiana Jones) and Wadi Rum (The Martian or Star Wars) are absolute highlights that await visitors. Highlights that are also great to visit with small children. After a short, 3-day trip, we were definitely blown away by this film-worthy setting.

3 days in Petra and Wadi Rum with the family (from Aqaba)

Day 1 - Aqaba to Petra

We decided to hire a driver because our little daughter was still very small and we didn't want to concentrate on driving. This had the advantage that we got to know a lot about the country in a short time.

So on the first day, our driver picked us up right in front of the hotel. After successfully fitting the baby seat (the driver had organized the child seat for the older daughter), we set off towards Petra. We soon found ourselves in a desert landscape and our children were fascinated watching the camels on the side of the road. After a stopover with a nice view (Petra View Shop, of course including a souvenir shop) and around 3 hours of driving, we reached Wadi Musa. Wadi Musa is the starting point for Petra. After a hearty lunch, we set off into the wonderful world of the former desert city of Petra. Here, too, we had a guide who really did a very good job and was able to respond well to our needs. Our older daughter really wanted to climb into caves, which was no problem for our guide. Since we were traveling with a stroller, we concentrated on the core of Petra, which took a good 5 hours. However, this time flew by. Ambitious travelers can certainly see more than we can. For us, it was a very special experience. For us it was a magical moment to come face to face with the rock portal - The Treasury - after the narrow canyon.

We spent the evening and night at the Old Village Resort, which we can highly recommend.

Wadi RUM

Day 2 - from Wadi Musa to Wadi Rum

After breakfast in Wadi Musa we headed back towards Aqaba towards Wadi Rum, another film-worthy location. After moving into our Martian tent and having a lunch break we went on a 2-hour jeep safari. A real highlight for our older daughter. Our baby daughter also took part well, well protected in the child seat. For families with older children we definitely recommend a jeep safari that is as extensive as possible. The scenery is simply incredible and the time passes far too quickly. The Bedouins who run the tourism here were all very nice. Our older daughter still raves about the tea in the Bedouin tent.

In the evening, there is typically a local speciality cooked in the sand. In our desert camp, there was also a buffet that had plenty of options for kids too. Afterwards, we enjoyed the view of the stars from our Martian Tent.

Day 3 - from Wadi Rum to Aqaba

After breakfast we stopped for a detour to the Wadi Rum Train Station. It was definitely a good photo opportunity. Then we set off on the approximately 1-hour journey back to Aqaba.
